Shopify SEO Consultant

I help small and medium UK businesses sell more through their Shopify stores by getting them found in search. As a freelance Shopify SEO consultant, I'll audit your store, fix whatever's holding it back and then keep working on it month after month to grow your organic traffic and, more importantly, your sales.

This page is all about Shopify. If you're on a different platform, my ecommerce SEO services cover online shops more broadly, and you can see everything else I do on my SEO services page.

What I Do as Your Shopify SEO Consultant

Shopify makes it easy to get a store online. Getting that store found in Google takes a bit more work, and this is where I come in. My job is to find and fix the things stopping your store from showing up in search, then build on that with keyword research, better product and collection pages and content aimed at the things your customers are looking to buy.

The work usually falls into three parts:

  • An audit of how search engines crawl and index your store, and what's getting in the way.
  • Fixing the technical and on-page issues that the audit turns up.
  • Ongoing monthly work on your product and collection pages, internal links and content, all measured against sales and revenue.

You'll deal with me the whole way through, from the first discovery call to every monthly meeting, because I do all of the work myself.

Why Work With Me

I've been working in digital marketing since 2017 and specialising in SEO since 2019, all of it at small, fast-paced agencies before I took the plunge into freelancing. Technical SEO and strategy are where my passion lies, but I'm more than happy to get stuck in and write content too if you don't have the time or the people for it.

Here's what you can expect when we work together:

  • A free discovery call to start, where we talk through your goals, budget and timeframes.
  • Direct access to me for the whole project.
  • A custom Looker Studio report each month, pulling in your Google Ads, Google Analytics and Search Console data alongside your rankings.
  • A monthly meeting to go through the report together and make sure we're aligned.
  • No long-term contracts and a fixed monthly fee. There are no tiered SEO packages either, so whatever level you choose, you get the full service.
  • A reply within 24 hours at the latest.

I won't promise you rankings for a handful of keywords, because rankings on their own don't pay the bills. I measure success in sales and revenue from search. And if it turns out search isn't the right channel for your store, I'll tell you honestly and point you towards someone in my network who can help instead.

Shopify SEO Experience

I look after the SEO for a London mobility equipment retailer on Shopify, and I've also done SEO for Clemsons Vintage, another Shopify store. For Clemsons I set up their GA4 from scratch as well, including ecommerce tracking, revenue reporting by channel, content engagement tracking and a sales funnel. I then built them some custom reports and ran two training sessions for the team.

Doing the SEO and the tracking together makes a real difference on Shopify. With ecommerce tracking set up properly, you can see which organic landing pages actually lead to sales and how much revenue search brings in compared with your other channels. If your analytics need some attention, I can sort out your GA4 setup and tracking alongside the SEO.

This service is aimed at small and medium UK Shopify stores. At that size every product and collection page has to pull its weight, and there's rarely an in-house SEO team to lean on, which is exactly where I fit in.

Technical Shopify SEO Depth

Shopify takes care of a lot of the basics for you. Shopify's own SEO overview explains that it creates your sitemap.xml and robots.txt automatically, adds canonical tags to help prevent duplicate content and builds product schema markup into its themes. That still leaves keyword research, meta descriptions, alt text and the way your pages link together down to you, and the way the platform is built throws up a few SEO problems of its own.

Technical SEO is the part of the job I enjoy most, and Shopify's quirks are exactly the kind of thing I like getting stuck into.

Common Shopify Technical Issues

These are the Shopify-specific issues I'll be looking out for on your store:

  • Duplicate content from collection, tag and vendor pages. The same product can often be reached through several collection paths, and tag and vendor pages can end up producing near-identical lists of products.
  • Product variant URLs, where each colour or size gets its own URL and search engines may treat it as a separate page.
  • Canonical tags that don't point where you'd expect. Shopify adds them automatically, but they're worth checking after a theme change or when a new app goes in.
  • Crawl budget wasted on faceted navigation and pagination. The filters and sort options on your collection pages can create a huge number of URLs, and Google's guidance on faceted navigation flags this as a cause of overcrawling, where crawlers spend their time on filtered URLs and less of it finding your new products. On Shopify the fix usually involves canonical tags and custom rules added through the robots.txt.liquid template.
  • Heavy themes, Liquid code and app scripts that slow your pages down and affect your Core Web Vitals.
  • Old product URLs with nowhere to go. When products sell out or get removed, those URLs need to point somewhere sensible, and I've written about automating Shopify redirects for stores that sell lots of one-off items.

On-Page Work on Products and Collections

Once the technical side is sound, I'll work through your product and collection pages. That means page titles and meta descriptions written for the searches each page should be winning, clear headings, internal links that help both shoppers and search engines find your main collections, and descriptive image alt text. I'll also check the structured data your theme outputs, so your products have the best chance of showing rich results in Google.

Keyword Research Mapped to Buyer Intent

Someone searching for a specific size, material or model is much closer to buying than someone typing in a broad category. I map keywords to individual product and collection pages based on what the person searching actually wants, so each page targets the searches it's best placed to win and your pages stop competing with each other.

Shopify SEO Audit

If you'd rather start smaller, a Shopify SEO audit is a great first step. I'll look at how search engines crawl and index your store, check for the technical issues above and pull out the quick wins you can act on straight away.

It's a one-off project, and what happens next is completely up to you. You can take the fixes in-house (which is totally fine!), ask me to implement them for you or move on to ongoing monthly SEO. There's more on what's covered on my SEO audit service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does Shopify SEO Cost?

It really depends on your store and how much work it needs, so I don't have a price list. My pricing is bespoke to each project and I don't do tiered SEO packages. Every level is the full service and the only thing that changes is how much gets done each month, so a bigger budget simply means faster progress. After a free discovery call, I'll give you a clear quote.

How Long Does It Take to See Results From Shopify SEO?

It depends on your store, your competition and how much gets done each month, so I won't promise you a timeframe. Technical fixes are usually the first to have an effect, because they clear the issues stopping search engines from crawling and understanding your pages. Content and authority take longer to build.

Can I Do SEO on My Shopify Store Myself?

Yes, and you can do a fair amount on your own. Shopify covers the basic SEO settings, and you can edit page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text straight from your admin. Platform-specific issues like duplicate content, wasted crawl budget and theme bloat are harder to spot and fix without experience, and that's usually where a specialist helps most. If you'd like to keep things in-house, an audit gives your team a list of fixes to work through.

Where Can I Hire a Shopify SEO Expert?

Look for someone who understands Shopify's quirks as well as general SEO, such as collection and variant duplication, robots.txt.liquid, app bloat and redirects. Ask which Shopify stores they've worked on, how they report on progress and whether they measure success in sales and revenue. And if you'd like to chat about your store, drop me a message and we can set up a call.
